FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You're probably wondering...

  • CEED Canada (Circular Environmental Education and Design) is a Black-led charitable organization dedicated to making climate action simple, convenient, and culturally relevant for Toronto’s underserved communities, especially low-income and racialized residents in social
    housing.

CEED Canada’s work is built on three core pillars:
    ● Education – delivering climate and environmental education through workshops, interactive programs, and hands-on learning tailored to the lived experiences of marginalized residents
    ● Advocacy – empowering communities to influence local and municipal climate policy, and amplifying the voices of those with lived expertise to promote equity and inclusivity in climate solutions.
    ● Research – co-designing and participating in community-based research initiatives to understand barriers and develop evidence-based strategies for effective climate action.

  • Culturally relevant environmental education: Interactive workshops (onsite and virtual), Eco-Blitz events, building initiatives, and tailored presentations covering waste management, energy efficiency, and GHG reduction.
    ● Community consultation: Needs assessments, resident engagement, and custom resources or curriculum for climate action projects.
    ● Distributed products: Climate Action Kits, manuals, and educational guides for residents and property managers.
    ● Participatory research: Data-driven evaluation, case studies, and research projects like “Climate Literacy in Social Housing”.
    ● Restorative, inclusive practices: Governance and conflict resolution modeled on African-centered and Indigenous restorative approaches.

  • C: Circular – Actions have ripple effects, influencing local and global systems.
E: Environmental – The environment is a set of interdependent systems; CEED
    leverages this systems thinking.
E: Education – Rooted in “educare” (to bring forward), CEED surfaces community
knowledge and connects it to climate action.
D: Design – Programs are co-designed with communities to continuously adapt and
    respond to real needs.

  • CEED’s main audience is:
    ● Building property owners/managers of low-income, social housing, particularly those
serving Black, Indigenous, and other racialized residents.
    ● Residents, students, community leaders, professionals, academic researchers, funders,
and policy-makers in sectors spanning housing, education, and food security.

  • ● Black-led and community-mirrored: Staff and board reflect the communities served, providing lived experience and trust.
    ● Integrates Indigenous and Afrikan/Caribbean knowledge into environmental work and climate action.
    ● Justice-focused: Every program centers equity, anti-oppression, and dismantling of systemic barriers.
    ● Resident-led and community-informed: Residents co-create, lead, and evaluate programs, not just participate.

  • ● Winner of the 2022 Women4ClimateTO Pitch Competition.

    ● High-profile presentations at major climate education conferences (e.g., University of Toronto, ).

    ● Partnerships with local groups, like the "Green Warriors Valet Project," resulting in significant waste diversion and resident engagement.

    ● Quantifiable improvements in residents’ recycling behavior, climate literacy, and community trust.

  • ● Financial contributions (donations, sponsorships, in-kind support).

    ● Participation in fundraising campaigns, resource-sharing, and community partnerships.

    ● Collaboration with academic, property management, or government partners on climate initiatives.
